Coral A Mineral or Sea Creature

Coral is not a mineral, but the skeleton of sea creatures, thus the organic origin. Developed over many thousands of years, it consists almost entirely of calcium. Coral reefs comprise colonies of marine animals called coral polyps, which form branching structures as they grown. Coral is the skeletal material generated by these sea-dwelling coral polyps. For most corals, this material is calcium carbonate, but in the case of black or golden corals, it is a horn-like substance called conchiolin. Coral has a dull luster when recovered, but can take a bright polish. It is sensitive to even mild acids, and can become dull with extensive wear. Red and pink precious corals are round in the warm seas around Japan and Malaysia, in the Mediterranean, and in African coastal waters. Black coral comes from the West Indies, Australia, and around the Pacific Islands.

Coral is used in carvings and beads, and cut as cabochons for use in jewelry. Red coral appears as an ornament in Western European shields and helmets in the Iron Age, later to be replaced by red enamel. Fossilized coral provides unusual and interesting material in beads, cabochons and pendants. According to Greek legend, coral came from the drops of blood shed when Perseus cut off the head of Medusa. In Classical antiquity, coral was believed to be a protection against the evil eye, and was worn as an amulet. As a medication, it was believed to stop bleeding. In the 18th century, precious coral was widely used as an inlay in Japanese ornamental netsukes. It has been a favorite of Chinese carvers for at least woo millennia.

Red coral is associated with Scorpio, black coral with Capricorn, and pink with Taurus. Coral is cleansed by being left overnight in salt water once a month. It can also be placed dry in sea salt. Coral symbolizes joy and happiness, diplomacy, quieting emotions, and visualization. It enables the wearer to enjoy life. According to legend, it consists of divine blood.

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out which fabrics and textures go with what. With so many fashion and accessory options, it can be a hit or miss. Mass Coil Links Go Simple

Yet another re-design for the studio; this particular piece started out with a mass of all coil links in black and brass and then I added charmed Sardonyx Agates. It got lots of attention and a few people even tried it on, but at over 24” and all the coil links it never really found a home.









So, back to the board with this one and pulled it apart; the black coil links and Sardonyx Agates were kept and met with faceted black Onyx and white glass beads. And I had two links left over to make dangle charmed earrings to match! It’s much shorter than the original and I still have the brass coil links and have another design in mind…so stay tuned!

Redesign of Simple to Non-Symmetrical Hit

This design was originally very simple and just had the white Magnesite and Bronzite. It got some attention, but didn't really have any life or color or that right ‘pop’; so it finally got a new look and this time, it hit the mark.





Shades of brown, turquoise, white and a hint of gold, all rolled into this non-symmetrical design. A crescent Turquoise pendant and pillow teardrops have a brown matrix is the start, surrounded by Bronzite coins, goldtone caged white Magnesite nuggets with a deep brown matrix Magnesite and all accented with light gold glass seed beads. I’ve been asked to create more non-symmetrical designs, rather than the always symmetrical and even designs. Cz Rings for Milestones

For all my high school readers, here’s an article for you. The end of the year comes quicker than you think, and for Seniors that means graduation. High School graduation is a rite of passage for all adolescents—especially in America. Graduation brings with it a lot of traditions including the purchase of a class ring. When I graduated from High school there was a very limited selection of women’s class rings. These days, there are so many options for girls and guys alike, from traditional to modern and cheap to expensive. The metals vary from sterling to platinum and you can even get diamonds set in your class ring. Now you can buy class bracelets, necklaces, key chains, earrings, pens, magnets, t-shirts, and much much more.

Some of my friends in high school got diamonds placed into their rings, but most purchased cubic zirconia rings. One of Audrey’s most famous roles was her role as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A lot of Hepburn’s iconic and classic style is also associated with this role she played. Her outfits within the film included a lot of black, white, and diamonds. The single most iconic look of the film would be the first outfit you see Audrey in. She wears a long black gown, a pearl and diamond necklace, diamond earrings, a diamond tiara, and elbow length black gloves. These days, it is quite easy to emulate this signature Audrey Hepburn look—minus the diamonds, of course. Unless you are someone who can afford diamonds, this part of your Audrey Hepburn look would have to be slightly different. Wire Book Review: Contemporary Copper Jewelry

There are some really great books out there on all sorts of jewelry subjects. I came across one by an excellent author, Sharilyn Miller, who has done wire wrapping and beading techniques for years. This new book of hers, called Contemporary Copper Jewelry: Step-by-Step Techniques and Projects, in my opinion, hits the mark on a variety of techniques. As always, it starts out giving basic techniques and instruction suitable for any level of wire wrapper. She incorporates seedbeading into an art with the Peacock Wheels Necklace, gives a fresh look to contemporary pebbles that are ‘free form wrapped’ into aged chain; and adds flare and funk to Coil Dangle Earrings and Coin Pearl Coil Wrapped Bracelet.

An excellent book of projects and techniques, look for it at your local book or hobby/craft store.

It’s a very easy, casual style that can be either dressy or classic depending on what you wear with them or how you wear the charmed design. The latest trend in Jewelry and specifically in necklaces has been popping up all over Hollywood this past year. The trend started on the runway and is now making it into your malls and department stores. Bib necklaces, in my opinion, would fall under the category of bold jewelry. There are some lovely crocheted bib necklaces that give an entirely different look than the more common jeweled versions. Personally, for special occasions I prefer jeweled bib necklaces. The bib necklaces off the runways of fashion’s hottest designers were either real jewels or Swarovski crystals. Either way, neither option would be viable for the everyday woman. Silent Auction Feeding Frenzy

We started out the day with grand expectations and had front row seats to the silent auction showdowns! Silent Auctions are great and they tend to raise a great deal of money for charities or scholarship funds. This past weekend we did the Deep in the Arts of Texas show; hosted by the Randolph Officer’s Spouse Club (ROSC). All proceeds from this show, including the silent auction go towards their scholarship funds and charities around the base and surrounding city.

It never fails that there are usually quite a few items that gather a large crowds of bidders…in this case, both my mother-in-law’s piece and mine gathered ‘feeding frenzy bidding’ in the last seconds between several bidders. Our long time client and friend Sharon got ‘down and handy’ with that pen and won both our auction items! Thanks to Sharon and everyone else for coming out to support such a great event! The watch appeared to be a bracelet, but at anytime Bella could have checked her watch as not to be late for her vampire lover, Edward.

For those in the San Antonio, Texas area, Timeless Designs will be at the Deep in the Arts of Texas show this Saturday, October 10th, Live Oak Civic Center from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Help support the Randolph Officer’s Spouse Club (ROSC) at their annual craft show. Over 100 vendors featuring artists from around the state, raffles, food and every hour is a silent auction.
