Wired Up Coral Mix

A wired up mess of balls are the focal of this necklace! Tightly wound balls of wire in antique brass are set along with a chunky sponge coral pendant accented with multiple layers of gold-tone cone bead caps.

Scattered between are lampwork beads with light cream/yellow backgrounds and red swoosh marks. The length of the necklace is of red (dyed) coral flat disks and finished with a gold tone twisted toggle.

Striking Mix of Bold Colors

Ok, I have to admit that this design in the bold colors of red, black, white and silver are extremely striking together. The design is new for me and I’ve taken a mix of different techniques to combine and put this piece together. And so far it’s begun to be a big hit and I’ve been asked to create more in different colors and styles!

The necklace focal center is designed to stay stationary on either a silk cord or a ribbon cord. I’ve used in this case a large chunk of coral (dyed) in a thick oval shape; then surrounded it in single coils. To accent the pendant, I’ve hand charmed 36 pieces different shapes of stones coral, freshwater cultured pearls, black agate, and Swarovski crystals; between I’ve added a couple of double spiral coils and then capped the entire piece into a stationary position with wired coils and swirls that becomes part of the design.

The whole piece is quite labor intensive taking quite a bit of time to design, mix/match colors and stones, then hand charm each one and either wire, bail or get creative with the pendant. The matching earrings are the same double coils and stones from the necklace – all wire is done in non-tarnish silver wire.

Keep watching as I’ll be doing many more of these inspirations from the many pendants, stones and metals that I have!

Red Explosion Coral

Explosions of red coral in chic jewelry fashions! Using the natural stone Coral as a focal, each design is created with imagination, depth and classic style; here’s how they are created and seen through the eyes of two different jewelry designers.

The first design to the right is designed by me, using tiny red and black Coral branches with additions of tiny white seed beads and silver spacers; highlighting a stunning handcrafted in non-tarnish silver wire natural Brazilian Oco Agate that displays a black background with wavy white veins and a hint of red.

The second to the left is designed by Gayle in a graduated combination of Coral and black Jet disks then accenting througout with faceted Onyx stones and fancy spacers. This special set includes all three pieces - necklace, bracelet and earrings.

Coral A Mineral or Sea Creature

Coral is not a mineral, but the skeleton of sea creatures, thus the organic origin. Developed over many thousands of years, it consists almost entirely of calcium. Coral reefs comprise colonies of marine animals called coral polyps, which form branching structures as they grown. Coral is the skeletal material generated by these sea-dwelling coral polyps. For most corals, this material is calcium carbonate, but in the case of black or golden corals, it is a horn-like substance called conchiolin. Coral has a dull luster when recovered, but can take a bright polish. It is sensitive to even mild acids, and can become dull with extensive wear. Red and pink precious corals are round in the warm seas around Japan and Malaysia, in the Mediterranean, and in African coastal waters. Black coral comes from the West Indies, Australia, and around the Pacific Islands.

Coral is used in carvings and beads, and cut as cabochons for use in jewelry. Red coral appears as an ornament in Western European shields and helmets in the Iron Age, later to be replaced by red enamel. Fossilized coral provides unusual and interesting material in beads, cabochons and pendants. According to Greek legend, coral came from the drops of blood shed when Perseus cut off the head of Medusa. In Classical antiquity, coral was believed to be a protection against the evil eye, and was worn as an amulet. As a medication, it was believed to stop bleeding. In the 18th century, precious coral was widely used as an inlay in Japanese ornamental netsukes. It has been a favorite of Chinese carvers for at least woo millennia.

Red coral is associated with Scorpio, black coral with Capricorn, and pink with Taurus. Coral is cleansed by being left overnight in salt water once a month. It can also be placed dry in sea salt. Coral symbolizes joy and happiness, diplomacy, quieting emotions, and visualization. It enables the wearer to enjoy life. According to legend, it consists of divine blood.
